Home Business Stress
and welcome to another issue of Health eBiz.
Well, its been a stressful month for me
- and I suspect it has for many home business owners as well.
First there was the FTC scare when the lawmakers came
down heavily on spammers, scammers, and some internet businesses -
many illegitimate, a few not.
Mainly it was the lack of disclaimers on their websites
that drew the ire of the FTC. If you came in late, you can read
all about it here.
Personally, I was glad the Sheriff came to town and
cleaned out the riffraff. It'll make the net a better place - especially
for those of us involved in legitimate business online.
But it also made me wonder about people like you and
me for whom a home business conjures up images of less stressful days,
more enjoyment and vacationing with family and loved ones.
While its definitely possible to make this a reality,
many newbies don't realise that a home business is a BUSINESS - whether
you conduct it on the internet, from the comfort of your home, or
from an office, its the same.
No, let me correct that - its NOT the same.
In the corporate world, the work is divided up among hundreds of people
who are each responsible for doing their bit. In a home business you
have to be everything from CEO to bottlewasher.
For most new, hopeful entrepreneurs with stars in
their eyes and dreams of making it rich online, the realities of time-management,
sleep-deprivation, demands of home, family, children can just get
overwhelming.
Often the fault lies with the ads that promise you
can become wealthy with just two hours of work a day.
What they gloss over is that in the first few years
of ANY business, whether an internet-based or a "real-world"
one, you have to work extremely hard to give it the momentum
it needs to really take off.
If you do not understand this fact you'll likely end
up stressed out, discouraged, and doubting your own abilities to succeed.
That's one of the reasons why I chose to deal with
the problem of stress in this month's issue.
Many of you may not agree with this month's article
on "Quick Fixes" and how they are not a solution, especially
when, as wellness marketers, we are trying to sell those very potions
to our customers.
But I think that in doing what's best for the customer
- and here that is - NOT promising that our products are going to
solve all their problems, we are doing what's best for our business.
I also had the opportunity to read a new, and excellent
book, "The
Emotion Prism: How To Be Happy, When You'd Rather Be Sad!" by
Dr. Mani Sivasubramaniam, a paediatric heart surgeon and internet
marketer who shares his simple coping strategies for life´s
problems.
It truly helped me get my own problems in perspective
and reaffirmed my ability to cope with them. I urge that you take
a look at it.
I read through it in just a few hours and still remember
the simple truths outlined in it as I deal with everyday problems.
In fact it gave me the inspiration for this month's article.
Also the proceeds from the sale of Dr. Mani's eBook
go towards helping children with heart problems in India. So "have
a heart"
and check it out here: http://www.emotionprism.com

opinion. It does not claim to represent current facts or popular opinion.
I'd love to know how you and your family manage the trials of coping
with your home business?

Dear Priya,
Greetings from the beautiful Philippines! I just "cleaned
up" my email box and yours was one of the very few I retained because
I enjoyed reading your ezine. Not only is it informative, but it has
lots of links and good stuff, too! I wonder how you still can manage
to squeeze some quality time and contents to your other web sites.
Keep up the good work! And may you be blessed more than you desire!

Dear Priya Shah,
I absolutely loved your article. I guess it was the inspiration I
needed. I have an online retail store that I am just starting and
I want to start putting articles of all kinds on my links page to
give people a reason to come back and stay longer. I would love to
put your article "To Be A Champion, Become A Child" if it is ok with
you.
Sincerely,
Marilee Love

The Omega-3 Phenomenon
Sounds like a WMD from a Bond thriller? Actually its a compound that's
proving to be a formidable weapon against heart disease, eczema, arthritis,
inflammation, autoimmune disease, hypertension, cancer and even depression.
Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils, flax seed and borage oils,
are showing so much promise that a Canadian nutritional oil company
Bioriginal Food & Science has even introduced an organic, omega-3-rich
flax flour, the first of its kind on the market.

Barefoot in the Dock
Multiple regulatory actions and the discovery of lead in Bob Barefoot's
Coral Calcium Supreme are expected to have a powerful effect on coral
calcium marketing. On June 10 the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) formally
charged Robert Barefoot, Kevin Trudeau, and their companies with making
false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits of coral
calcium. The agency said it will ask a federal court to freeze the
assets of both parties and order restitution to consumers who purchased
their product, Coral Calcium Supreme. In addition, the FTC and the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are sending warning letters to
websites that sell coral calcium.

Research Vindicates Atkins Diet Efficacy
Only a month after Dr. Robert Atkins' death, his often-ridiculed diet
has received an endorsement of its effectiveness from two of medicine's
most distinguished journals. The New England Journal of Medicine published
a clinical trial that found the high-fat, high-protein, low-carbohydrate
diet did not cause disastrous increases in serum cholesterol and even
reduced one or two cardiac risk factors. Similar findings for a low-carbohydrate
diet by another group of Penn faculty working at Philadelphia VA Medical
Center were also reported in the journal. Research has also found
that eating fatty foods stays hunger longer.

Carrots and Smokers Don't Mix
US researchers are cautioning smokers and drinkers that taking beta-carotene
supplements to avoid cancer could have the opposite effect. Taking
supplements of the vitamin A precursor beta-carotene may increase
the risk of colorectal cancer in smokers and drinkers, according to
new research published this week. While beta-carotene, a powerful
antioxidant, has been associated with cancer-fighting properties,
there is also previous evidence to show that it has negative effects
in smokers.

An Eye for Antioxidants
Reach for those antioxidant vitamins if you're in danger of developing
cataracts, says a new special health report from Harvard Medical School.
There's some truth to the belief that "eating carrots is good for
the eyes," the Harvard publication said, but noted that diets containing
more antioxidant vitamins such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C "are even
better" in protecting the eyes against cataracts and age-related macular
degeneration.

"Busting" the Enhancers
It was bad news for the less well-endowed when so-called "Bust Enhancing"
herbal products got a thumbs down in a commentary in the June issue
of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, at George Washington
University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, points out that various
so-called 'bust enhancing' products contain a variety of ingredients,
some of which are known to have negative side effects. While some
ingredients have estrogen-like effects, none are expected to have
a potent enough effect to increase breast size. [Fugh-Berman A. "Bust

Ephedra Banned in Illinois
On May 25, 2003, On Sunday, May 25, Ill. Governor Rod Blagojevich
signed into law Senate Bill 1418, making Illinois the first state
in the U.S. to ban the sale of the herbal supplement ephedra. The
legislation, which went into effect immediately, makes it a misdemeanor
to sell or offer for sale "any quantity of ephedra or ephedrine alkaloids"
to anyone in the state of Illinois, and is punishable by up to five
years in jail and a $20,000 fine. The bill does not apply to ephedra
contained in cold remedies or make it a crime to possess the substance,
which could still be purchased over the Internet or in neighboring
states.

Sick With Worry
Can you really worry yourself sick? Yes, says a study of over 60,000
people in Norway which found that people prone to anxiety are more
likely to get cancer. The findings add to the controversy over whether
purely psychological factors can trigger cancer. One theoretical link
is that negative psychological states decrease the efficiency of the
immune system, therefore allowing cancer cells to grow undetected.
Another study, of people with depression, does indeed reveal dramatic
reductions in immune functions.

Tip
Converting Subscribers to Customers
In last time's eBiz tip,
we wrote about the different types of "bait" you can use
to get your leads or prospects to signup for your list/newsletter.
Now that the fish are biting and you've started building
your subscriber list, what are the factors that will make them click
that "Order" button?
If you have targeted your subscribers well - if they
are interested in what you have to offer - then the most important
factors that will make a difference to your conversion rate are:
- Regular Follow-Up
Your subscribers need to be reminded every now and then that your
offer or products are there to solve their problems.
- A Great Offer
Your sales letter is the most important part of your email or website.
It must draw your visitors in and get them interested in your products,
service or opportunity. It must also be convincing. Personalize
your letter so that you address customers by their first name.
- A User-friendly Website
Don't make your visitors jump through hoops to place their order.
Your website has to be user-friendly and the order/signing-up process
must be easy to follow and do.
Here's an article by Ken Hill with very useful tips
to help you convert subscribers.

12 Tips To Help You Turn Your Visitors Into
Customers
by Ken Hill
Make buying your products hard to resist by giving
away free bonuses for purchasing your product.
Your free bonuses can be ebooks you have the resell
rights to, free one on one consulting, promotional resources, or anything
else that you feel your visitors would find to be valuable.
Listen to your customers and incorporate the positive
things they say about your product into your sales message.
Provide testimonials on your site from your happy
customers. This will assure your visitors that your products will
more than meet their expectations because your products have proven
to successfully produce great results for other people.
When asking if you can publish your customers testimonials,
ask if you may also include their name and website information along
with their endorsement.
This will add more credibility to your testimonials
and further decrease any resistance your visitors may have to your
sales message.
Find out from your own sales statistics how well your products sell
at different prices, using different promotions, or when offering
different bonuses for purchasing your products.
Remember that underpricing your products is just as
dangerous as overpricing them because if you price your products too
low you run the risk of people not viewing them to be as valuable
as they are.
Identity the key benefits your visitors will get by
purchasing your product, and stress those benefits repeatedly in your
copy.
Use subheadlines throughout your copy that grab your
readers attention, that keep them reading through your sales message,
and that stress the benefits of purchasing your product.
Assure your visitors that they have nothing to lose
by purchasing from you, by offering them a strong money back guarantee.
Make customer service a top priority. Answer any questions
your visitors or customers have about your products or services as
quickly as possible.
If you have people working for you that are responsible
for customer service, train them how to successfully deal with your
visitors and customers in a friendly, professional way.
Show your visitors that you offer a high quality product
by providing them with a free trial. This could be the first couple
of chapters of an informational product, or a free trial version of
a marketing resource or software product.
Use a call to action that directs your visitor to
order from you, to start their free trial or whatever the next step
is in your sales process.
Use a PS that stresses again the benefits of purchasing
your product or that tells your visitor of a new added benefit such
as a free bonus that your visitor will receive for buying your product.
Follow up with your visitors after they leave your
site by providing free email courses or by publishing a newsletter.
This will keep people visiting your site and capture
sales you wouldn't have made without a follow up system in place.

Quick Fixes: Happiness in a Bottle
Copyright © 2003 Priya Shah
This is the age of the Quick Fix - the magic bullets
that claim to take away our sorrows, our tiredness, our sadness.
You need look no farther than your mailbox to see
the range of remedies - prescription drugs and supplements - being
plugged for everything from stress to low energy.
In the age of modern-day stresses, of recessions and
depressions, most people find it hard to resist the cure-all promises
of "safe and natural" products.
From those that claim to calm a hyperactive child,
to those that give you a much-needed energy boost, or revive a sagging
love life, quick fixes are everywhere.
And the fact that the people selling them are raking
in a fortune shows that there is indeed a great demand for these products.
There's no doubt that supplements provide genuine
relief to those who suffer from organic disease. And some may provide
a 'safer' alternative for those who cannot tolerate prescriptions.
But with more and more people reaching for a "safe"
pill just to get through the day, taking supplements to cope with
life is becoming the norm rather than the exception.
Most of us simply don't have the time or the inclination
to address the root cause of our stress. Besides it costs considerably
more to consult a therapist than to buy a bottle of kava-kava from
an online store.
But quick fixes are a short term solution. And by
using them as coping strategies, we risk slipping into a never-ending
cycle of psychological dependence, while ignoring the root cause of
our stress.
Stress - resulting from the way we react to situations,
from the emotions, behaviour patterns and habits that are part of
our mental makeup.
Changing the attitudes or habits of a lifetime is
never easy. We must find coping strategies - support from friends,
family, community, religion, spirituality - and our own inner strength.
We need to use whatever works best for us, to avoid
slipping back into the cycle of stress and despair.
The solutions are often there right in front of us
- if we care enough to look for them. You could find them in a book,
a church, a family reunion, a new love.
Often the answers are right there in your mind, but
you have to CHOOSE to accept them.
Solving a problem takes three conscious steps:
Awareness: Realising that we have a problem
Acceptance: That we have to do something about it, and
Action: Taking concrete steps to resolve it
Once you start to eliminate the root cause of your
stress, you´ll find yourself reaching less and less for that
magic pill, that upper, that quick fix.
A pill might give you a few moments of bliss. But
when you eliminate the attitudes and behaviour that keep you down,
the peace it brings will last you a lifetime.

Emotion Prism: How To Be Happy, When You'd Rather Be Sad!" by Dr.
Mani Sivasubramaniam, a paediatric heart surgeon and internet marketer

THE
LIGHTER SIDE
Researchers released a list of foods and activities
to help combat osteoporosis, the dread disorder that leaches calcium
from the bones as people age. The distinguished lead scientist mounts
the podium to make his announcement and gives the highlights of the
list.
To no one's surprise, broccoli and cauliflower are
there, and the researchers also encourage regular exercise, such as
walking, running, cycling or swimming to prevent calcium loss from
the bones.
But, one reporter, reading ahead, shouts from the
front row, "You've got kissing on the list as a way to prevent osteoporosis!
There isn't any calcium in a kiss!" The scientist replied calmly,
"In a good kiss, there's enough calcium to make a bone about 10 inches
long...
